Alprazolam is a prescription medication in the benzodiazepine class, commonly prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorders and panic disorder. It works by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that helps calm excessive brain activity. Because of its fast onset and potent effects, alprazolam is effective when used appropriately—but it also requires careful medical oversight.
Doctors may prescribe alprazolam for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, and short-term relief of severe anxiety symptoms. In some cases, it may be used off-label for anxiety associated with depression or other conditions, always under close supervision.
